Meet my childhood crush. Coming at your today with a simple and delicious Homemade Healthy Nutella recipe.
Being from Europe, you guys KNOW that I grew up eating Nutella. And it’s been YEARS since I’ve had any. I finally decided to make a healthier version so my kids could share in my childhood nostalgia. I can’t believe how easy it was to make. And how freaking delicious it is. All real food ingredients. None of the crap.
OK… who else grew up eating Nutella for breakfast? I know I did. Since then, I’ve changed my ways and tend to eat protein and vegetables for breakfast. But sometimes a little chocolate hazelnut butter treat is just what a girl needs.
The recipe is simple. Only 6 ingredients. No artificial garbage or hydrogenated oils. Lightly roasted hazelnuts combined with sweet chocolate. And it actually tastes like I remember. Takes me back to long summer days in Finland before I had any responsibilities or worries.
The best part about this healthy nutella recipe is sharing it with my kids. There are times that I wonder if they feel like they are missing out because I’m such a health food nut. They have both grown up eating healthy, delicious clean food. And I do bake healthy treats once in a while. It just feels good to share with them some nostalgic sweetness from my childhood. Kind of like giving them a window into my past.
Tips for Making Healthy Nutella:
- The most time consuming part of this recipe is removing the skins of the hazelnuts. I do this by first roasting the nuts and then rubbing skins off with a clean kitchen towel. I recommend doing this in small batches. Simply place hazelnuts into the fold of a clean kitchen towel and rub the skins off. Don’t worry about getting all of the skin off, just most of it.
- Be patient when you are making the hazelnut butter in the first step. Give it time to get nice and creamy. This will make for a smooth final product.
- Once you add the remaining ingredients to the hazelnut butter, again be patient while the mixture incorporates. Process until it is nice and smooth. This will ensure that your healthy nutella will not separate in the fridge.

Homemade Healthy Nutella
- Yield: about 1 3/4 cups 1x
Ingredients
- 2 cups hazelnuts
- 1/4 cup cacoa powder (like this) (or unsweetened cocoa powder)
- 1/2 cup full fat coconut milk (where to buy BPA free coconut milk)
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 pinches unrefined salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375’F. Place hazelnuts onto baking sheet and roast for 12-15 minutes until nuts are fragrant and slightly brown. Remove from oven.
- To peel off skins, place roasted nuts into the fold of a kitchen towel and gently massage until most of skin comes off.
- Place peeled hazelnuts into food processor and process until creamy smooth – about 8-10 minutes. Be sure to scrape sides a couple of times.
- Add remaining ingredients and process again until smooth. This may take a couple of minutes. Adjust consistency with extra coconut milk if too thick.
- Store in airtight glass container for about a week. Enjoy!

Food is also my medicine along with dance. I love chocolate! This all natural spread caught all my senses and made me discover Savory Lotus. I’m very pleased to go through this awesome place where healthy living with delicious real food is so natural. Thank you Katja!
Wonderful! Welcome! 🙂
This looks so delicious and yes I eat protein and vegetables for breakfast too but this would be great for a change! All the very best from Normandie, Sue

Heck yes! I bought a nutcracker just for this recipe 🙂 Should this be refrigerated?
Yes, it keeps well in fridge for about a week or so. Enjoy!
Is there any way to make it last longer?
Hi, Talya! Since it does not have any preservatives in it, it will not last very long in the fridge. When I posted the recipe, I was conservative and said one week. Our jar NEVER lasts that long since it gets eaten so quickly. But the last jar I made was in our fridge closer to 2 weeks and was fine. I just like to be careful on my site so no one eats spoiled food. 😉 Hope that helps.
Try making half batches.
Been meaning to have a go at making my own Nutella, been craving it so bad, so perfect timing! It came out amazing!

Yay!
This is so fun! I have never bought the Nutella at the store because it is so full of sugar and junky milk! I can’t wait to try this!

It’s so good! Reminds me of being a kid.
I’ve never actually made homemade Nutella but you make it look so easy! I think I will have to try it soon! Beautiful pictures too.
Thank, Michelle! It’s so easy. The most time consuming part is de-skinning the hazelnuts. It’s totally worth it!!
May I ask why you remove the skins? Could you make it with the skins?
I remove the skins so I get a smoother hazelnut butter. You can leave the skin on, but it will affect the texture and the taste a bit. 🙂
Can we replace coconut milk with another type of nut milk?
I haven’t tried it. I use coconut milk bc it’s so thick and creamy. 🙂 I’m guessing it would work tho.
I’m REALLY excited about this. Nutella was a favorite of mine growing up, but ew… the ingredients are nasty….but THIS…. HEALTHY NUTELLA. It’s a dream come true!
Right!!??!! I’m so happy to be able to enjoy Nutella again- in a healthier way!
I wish I could have a spoonful of this beauty right now! It looks so good!
Seriously!! I eat it by the spoonful too!!
I love chocolate and hazelnuts, so this is wonderful. I actually never had the Nutella in the store before, but this one is much healthier.
Growing up in Europe, it’s just a thing you do. Hope you enjoy this healthier version!!
LOVE Nutella ! I first learned about nutella when I was traveling in Italy then couldn’t live without it after I came back to the states. Now I have paleo healthy version. Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe !
★★★★★
I LOVE it too! Enjoy!!
I saw that picture recently of Nutella separated out into its individual ingredients and it’s just so much white sugar! This homemade version looks so much better.
I know! And I ate so much of it growing up. This recipe is WAY better!
Getting so impressed by your photography these days. Those hazelnuts on the pan and on the towel! Well done.

Awe…. thanks, Rachel! I feel like I get lucky sometimes. The light is just right and everything lines up.
This looks so much better than store bought! Love that it’s healthy enough to share with the kiddos and feel good about it!
It’s so good! And WAY healthier!
I’m going have to make this soon!
You will be so happy that you did! It’s so good!
This is the spread of my dreams!
Me, too!
Making today because I wNt to make crepes. I live in France and haven’t ate Nutella in years because of the sugar. I was wonder g if I could use a powdered/granulated sweetner instead of maple syrup.? Thanks for the amazing recipe.

I haven’t tried it but I’m guessing it will work. If it’s too dry, you could add a splash more of the coconut milk.
I am so excited to try this one! Your pics are lovely
Thanks, Erin!
This is a must have recipe for our household since we’re both addicted to nutella!
★★★★★
Seriously!! I can’t stop eating it!
You make it look so easy!! I love nutella and can’t wait to try!
It really is easy to make. The most time consuming part is rubbing off the skins. But so worth it!
Thoughts on doing almond milk instead of coconut milk?
I have not tried it. Full fat coconut is so creamy. That is why I use it. Please let me know if you try it. It will probably be ok. Just can’t say for sure.
Tasted great, thanks ?
So glad you liked it. I think I need to make some more today!
I made this last night with a friend and indeed the most consuming part of the process is removing the skins! We made a few batches and it tastes AMAZING ! Thank your for the great recipe ?

Seriously! I wish there was an easier way to do it. But it’s SO worth it! 🙂
I am so excited about this recipe! I live Nutella but the original has so much sugar in it ( never mind all the other unhealthy stuff in it) that I can’t justify eating it (or giving it to my kids). Plus since I cut down on eating sugar my taste buds have changed and now it just tastes too sweet! Thank-you for sharing this recipe.
Yay! I love this recipe too. I love healthier versions of my childhood favs. And I agree. I don’t like the taste of original Nutella anymore.
Thanks for sharing! Really excited to try this but need to find a sub for hazelnut (me and my son are sensitive to hazelnut). Any thoughts? Thanks again!
Ou can make this with just about any nut that you like- almonds, cashews, etc. Let me know if you try it. 🙂
This is amazing! It was really, really easy to make and holy **** is it good! Never going back to the original now, when this is easy, even better tasting, and no junk ingredients. Thank you so much!
YAY! So glad you loved it. I could eat this stuff all day long!!! 🙂
Can this be frozen or canned?
Hi, Jen! I haven’t tried freezing or canning this. My family eats it too quickly. 😉 Let me know if you try it.
This looks amazing!
BUT, I really really hate anything coconut?
What could I use instead of coconut milk?
Anything else would be acceptable to me.
Thanks!
You could use any milk that you like. I use coconut milk bc it is so thick and creamy. You could do heavy cream if you do dairy. 🙂
sooo deliciouss and yummyy

Yay! So glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
Is this only good for a week ?
Hi, Jacqueline! I would say that a week is about how long I would keep it in the fridge. It may last a bit longer as long as you use a clean spoon every time. But it never last that long in our house. 😉
Nutritional info?
Hi, Diane! I don’t calculate. But if you’re interested, you can use this free app —-> https://www.myfitnesspal.com/ Hope that helps.
Could you freeze this?
I haven’t tried to freeze it. My family eats it too fast for me to even think about freezing it. Let me know if you try it. 🙂
